Village Sampler
Village Sampler, one of only two
needlework shops in the state, has been in business since
March of 1987.
Today it
is common for needlework enthusiasts from other states, the far reaches of
West Virginia or those just passing through
to call ahead to arrange special shopping trips.
Needlework shops are that scarce, but also each one has it’s own
personality and diverse inventory not to be missed.
Die-hard stitchers are constantly looking for unique and new
supplies for counted cross stitch, needlepoint, punch needle, embroidery
and other needlework. If
there’s a chart, fabric or thread that’s hard to find, Village Sampler
will probably have it -- or certainly try to get it for you. Although it
would be hard to imagine not finding what you would need and much more
with the walls and racks and cupboards brimming with bright colors and
beautiful things from which to choose.
There’s one entire room devoted to thousands of
patterns for cross stitch and needlepoint, not to mention charts sprinkled
all around the store like little treasures to be discovered. And there’s
another bright, sunny room in a front corner with a huge round table for
classes or for those who just want to come and sit and stitch awhile. One
long wall of the busy shop is covered with all manner and colors of
threads in silk, cotton, wool, sparkling metallic and even bamboo! The
opposite wall is lined with boxes with drawers and still more drawers of
flosses and perle cottons and so many other unusual threads and fibers.
The tall
walls and many shelves are filled to capacity with finished models.
Patti sees to it that the models and samples keep moving around the
room and also in the shop’s big window to accommodate the changing
seasons. The cheerful displays are all there to whet the stitching
appetites of experienced and beginning needle workers alike. Surprisingly,
beginning cross stitch classes are always free! The busy proprietor will
easily stop what she’s doing and show someone the fundamentals of the
needle art any time they’re ready or just in the mood. Quick,
over-the-counter lessons certainly seem to be the daily norm, too.
Classes, workshops and new projects for 2007 are being scheduled for the
coming months.
In
addition to actually stitching, every one of the countless shop models has
been framed at Village Sampler, too. Time-consuming stretching of needle
art makes a big difference in the final appearance.
Patti stresses the importance of using acid free matting and
mounting for all frame-able treasures, not just needlework, for long term
preservation.
Almost two
years ago the shop returned to
Olde
Main
Plaza
near where it began all those years ago.
“Often the plaza doesn’t look busy, but we were pleasantly surprised
at the foot traffic we noticed when we were lucky enough to find so much
space at such a reasonable rent” Patti stated. “And it’s been fun to
be in the vicinity of other shops instead of a free-standing location like
before. It’s a great atmosphere where we kind of look out for each
other.”
“I just wish more area folks would
follow their dreams. Open those wonderful little shops and businesses that
they’ve always thought would be such a great idea!”
Patti also thinks that since many of the plaza landlords have
changed to primarily local owners it is a good location for small
businesses.
